 Back Pain

Back pain is one of the most common reasons people come to see me — and in most cases, it responds well to conservative care. The underlying cause matters, which is why I take time to thoroughly evaluate your spine before recommending treatment.
Among the most common causes:
•    Pinched nerves (radiculopathy) compressing spinal nerve roots
•    Herniated disc pressing on adjacent nerve tissue
•    Osteoarthritis (degenerative joint disease) causing joint inflammation and stiffness
•    Spinal stenosis narrowing the spinal canal

Treatments commonly used in my practice:
•    Spinal manipulative therapy to restore joint alignment and motion
•    Non-surgical spinal decompression traction to relieve disc and nerve pressure
•    Targeted therapeutic exercise to stabilize your lumbar spine
•    Massage and trigger point therapy to reduce muscle tension

Neck Pain

Neck pain can range from mild morning stiffness to pain that radiates down your arm — and the cause makes all the difference in how it should be treated. Most cases are mechanical in origin and may respond well to conservative care.
Among the most common causes:
•    Sprain/strain of cervical muscles and ligaments
•    Herniated cervical disc pressing on a nerve root
•    Osteoarthritis (degenerative joint disease) of the cervical spine
•    Whiplash — acceleration-deceleration injury to the cervical spine

Treatments commonly used in my practice:
•    Cervical spinal manipulative therapy to restore joint motion
•    Non-surgical spinal decompression traction for disc-related compression
•    Soft tissue therapy, massage, and trigger point release
•    Therapeutic exercise targeting cervical stabilizing muscles

Herniated Disc

A herniated disc occurs when the soft inner material of a spinal disc pushes through its outer casing and presses on nearby nerves. If you have been told you have a herniated disc, you may have more conservative options than you realize before considering surgery.
Common causes:
•    Age-related wear and deterioration of disc material
•    Repetitive stress or heavy lifting that exceeds disc tolerance
•    Sudden trauma or injury compressing the spine
•    Poor posture and spinal misalignment increasing disc load
Treatments commonly used in my practice:
•    Non-surgical spinal decompression traction to relieve disc pressure
•    Spinal manipulative therapy to restore joint mechanics around the affected disc
•    Targeted core stabilization exercises to reduce disc loading
•    Soft tissue therapy to reduce compensatory muscle guarding

Sacroiliac Pain

The sacroiliac (SI) joint — where your spine meets your pelvis — is a commonly overlooked source of low back and buttock pain. It can mimic a disc problem or hip condition, which is why careful examination is so important.
Common causes:
•    Arthritis causing degenerative changes in the SI joint
•    Pregnancy-related ligament laxity and pelvic instability
•    Trauma from falls or direct impact to the pelvis
•    Prolonged repetitive movements stressing the joint over time
Treatments commonly used in my practice:
•    Spinal manipulative therapy targeting SI joint mobility and alignment
•    Targeted stabilization exercises for pelvic and lumbar musculature
•    Soft tissue therapy and trigger point release for surrounding muscles
•    Patient education on posture, lifting mechanics, and activity modification

Sciatica Leg Pain

Sciatica is the sharp, burning, or radiating pain that travels from your lower back through the buttock and down one leg — following the path of the sciatic nerve. It is a symptom, not a diagnosis, and finding the underlying cause is what guides effective treatment.
Common causes:
•    Herniated lumbar disc pressing on a sciatic nerve root
•    Piriformis syndrome compressing the sciatic nerve in the buttock
•    Sacroiliac joint dysfunction irritating adjacent nerve tissue
Treatments commonly used in my practice:
•    Non-surgical spinal decompression traction to relieve pressure on the nerve root
•    Spinal manipulative therapy to restore lumbar and pelvic joint alignment
•    Targeted core and gluteal exercises to stabilize your lumbar spine
•    Trigger point therapy for piriformis and surrounding hip rotator muscles
Learn more about Sciatica →

Hip Pain

Hip pain can originate from the joint itself, the surrounding tendons and bursae, or may actually be referred from your lower back — which is why an accurate diagnosis matters before treatment begins.
Among the most common causes:
•    Hip and gluteal tendinopathies from overuse or degeneration
•    Hip bursitis causing inflammation around the joint
•    Piriformis syndrome compressing the sciatic nerve near the hip
•    Referred pain from lumbar spine pathology mimicking hip symptoms
Treatments commonly used in my practice:
•    Spinal manipulative therapy addressing lumbar and pelvic joint dysfunction
•    Targeted therapeutic exercise for hip stabilizer and gluteal strengthening
•    Trigger point therapy and massage for piriformis and hip rotator muscles
•    Physical therapy modalities to reduce local inflammation and pain

Headaches

Many headaches have their roots in tension and dysfunction in the neck and upper back — which means they may respond well to the kind of hands-on care I provide. Identifying what type of headache you have is the essential first step.
Types I commonly treat:
•    Stress (tension) headaches from muscle tension in the neck and scalp
•    Cervicogenic headaches referred from cervical joint and muscle dysfunction
•    Migraine headaches, which in some patients are influenced by cervical triggers
Treatments commonly used in my practice:
•    Cervical spinal manipulative therapy to reduce joint-related headache triggers
•    Trigger point therapy targeting the suboccipital and upper trapezius muscles
•    Therapeutic exercise for cervical posture and stabilization
•    Physical therapy modalities to reduce muscle hypertonicity
Learn more about Headache →

Shoulder Pain

Shoulder pain is often traced to the rotator cuff, joint capsule, or surrounding bursae — but your neck can also refer pain directly into the shoulder region. A thorough examination helps sort out what is actually driving your symptoms.
Common causes:
•    Rotator cuff injury from overuse, degeneration, or acute trauma
•    Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) causing progressive stiffness
•    Shoulder bursitis causing inflammation of the subacromial bursa
Treatments commonly used in my practice:
•    Spinal manipulative therapy addressing cervical and thoracic joints contributing to shoulder dysfunction
•    Targeted therapeutic exercise for rotator cuff strengthening and scapular stabilization
•    Trigger point therapy and massage for rotator cuff and periscapular muscles
•    Physical therapy modalities including ultrasound and interferential stimulation

Whiplash

Whiplash is an acceleration-deceleration injury to the cervical spine — a rapid, forceful back-and-forth movement of the head and neck that stresses the bones, discs, muscles, ligaments, and nerves of your neck. Because it involves spinal trauma, I strongly recommend a prompt medical evaluation to rule out fracture or serious injury before conservative care begins.

Common causes:
•    Motor vehicle rear-end or side-impact collisions
•    Sports collisions or contact injuries
•    Falls involving sudden forceful head movement
Treatments commonly used in my practice (following medical clearance):
•    Cervical spinal manipulative therapy to restore joint motion and reduce pain
•    Soft tissue therapy and trigger point release for cervical and upper back musculature
•    Physical therapy modalities to manage acute inflammation and muscle spasm
•    Targeted progressive exercise for cervical stabilization and recovery

Your Journey to Healing: Your Treatment Plan

What Happens at Your First Visit

Good care starts with a thorough evaluation — not a rushed intake form. When you come in, we talk through your history in detail: how this started, what makes it better or worse, and how it's affecting your daily life.

The physical exam typically includes:

  • Range of motion — how well your neck, back, or joints move through their normal range

  • Orthopedic and neurological testing — reflexes, muscle strength, and sensation, especially if you have arm or leg symptoms

  • Palpation — feeling for tenderness, muscle spasm, and restricted joint motion along the spine

  • Postural assessment — altered spinal curves, forward head position, or pelvic asymmetry that may be contributing to your pain

Do you need imaging? Not always — but sometimes.

X-rays can help assess spinal alignment, rule out fracture, or identify degenerative changes. MRI is recommended when there are neurological signs, suspected disc herniation, or when symptoms aren't responding as expected. The decision is based on your clinical picture, not a routine protocol.

A Three-Step, Non-Surgical Treatment Plan

Once you've been evaluated and serious pathology has been ruled out, the path forward is straightforward. Care in this practice follows a structured, three-tiered approach — each step building on the one before it.

Step 1 — Education, Supportive Care & Gentle Activity
The first goal is protection — but not the kind that means lying still and waiting. Research consistently shows that patients who understand their condition and return to normal activity early, at a manageable pace, tend to recover better than those who rest passively. We'll talk through what's happening, what to expect, and how to move safely from the start. Simple measures like ice or heat and, when appropriate, short-term soft support can help manage early discomfort.

Step 2 — Hands-On Conservative Care
Once the acute phase settles, we shift to active restoration. This may include chiropractic adjustments, joint mobilization, soft-tissue therapy, and selected physical therapy modalities such as interferential muscle stimulation, therapeutic ultrasound, non-surgical spinal decompression, and shortwave diathermy. These are chosen based on your specific findings — not a one-size-fits-all protocol. The goal is to reduce pain, restore motion, and prepare your body to respond well to exercise.

Step 3 — Targeted Rehabilitative Exercise
Passive care can relieve pain. Exercise is what makes recovery last. A structured, progressive exercise program — targeting mobility, deep spinal stability, endurance, and movement control — is one of the most consistently supported interventions in the research literature for spine and joint conditions. This is where patients move from feeling better to functioning better, long-term.

Not every patient needs every component of every tier. Your plan is built around your exam findings and adjusted as you progress.

The Philosophy Behind the Plan

The progression is simple: protection → restoration → performance. We don't skip steps, and we don't rush the process.

If at any point your recovery isn't trending in the right direction, I'll tell you — and coordinate referral when appropriate. The goal is always to get you back to the things that matter: work, sleep, activity, and life without constant pain.
